What should I ask about Medicare?

Before your job-based coverage ends, confirm the end date with your benefits administrator. Ask how your current insurance works with Medicare and what enrollment steps you need to take.

Timing matters. Employment-based coverage, retiree coverage and COBRA do not all follow the same enrollment rules. Medicare.gov warns that COBRA does not extend the limited time to sign up for Medicare.

Prepare your expected retirement date, the date your insurance ends and a short list of questions. Use official Medicare and Social Security guidance for enrollment instructions, and ask your employer about any paperwork it needs to complete.
